Built Environment

Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) is the leading body for professionals specialising in the design, construction, evaluation and maintenance of buildings. The organization plays a critical role in shaping the built environment by improving, promoting and advancing the knowledge, study and practice of each and all of the arts and sciences concerned with the technology, planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair of the built environment.

CABE asked Fabrick to help align them with key industry issues and to provide opportunities for the Association to directly engage with their key audiences: built environment sector professionals.

The Solution:

Fabrick secured a panel debate at FIREX International – Europe’s only dedicated fire safety event. Working with CABE, we came up with the title ‘Hackitt’s Golden Thread – aspiration or action’. This thought-provoking subject would appeal to the event’s audience and provide the basis for a debate of substance and insight.

The topic covered a key theme that has been highlighted following the publication of Dame Judith Hackitt’s ‘Building a Safer Future: Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety’. With the industry recognising that, as well as regulatory change, a culture change is essential; with improvements needed in how professionals manage the process of record keeping for buildings across design, construction and operation – ‘the golden thread’. This broad topic aligns perfectly with CABE’s role within the industry as a professional body with members from across the built environment sector.

The purpose of the debate was to look at the achievability of this golden thread of information that spans regulatory, design, compliance, construction and operational management functions.

Gavin Dunn, Chief Executive of CABE, chaired the debate which included panelists from insurers FM Global, the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management, and multi-disciplinary consultant Hoare Lea. Each organisation plays a key role in the built environment and together they provided an insightful view from fire engineering and design, through to analysis of risk and building operation – echoing the Golden Thread.

The Results:

  • Direct engagement with key audiences
  • Successful delivery of a panel debate – standing room only
  • Delivery of social media support during and post event
  • Event generated media interest, resulting in an interview with CIBSE Journal
  • Successful alignment of CABE with key industry topics
